What’s the story?

Client / The Londoner, Macau

Designed as a theatrical centrepiece within Hampton Court at The Londoner, the Maypole Counter is a rotating dessert display conceived to surprise, delight, and anchor the dining experience. Commissioned by the Hong Kong–based F&B product team, the brief called for a highly expressive installation — one that combined visual drama with exceptional engineering precision.

Inspired by the form and movement of a traditional carousel, the counter is organised around a central pole supporting a series of flowing ‘fabric streamers’ — precision-formed shells wrapped in alternating red and white velvet. From these, sixteen rotating arms extend outward, each presenting an individual dessert plate, subtly illuminated by an integrated pinpoint LED.

Behind the spectacle sits a complex piece of engineering: a rotating core that delivers continuous power, arms designed to stop and auto-restart if obstructed, and an exacting level of detail throughout — from the finely balanced mechanics to the playful jester crowning the top of the structure.

The result is a bold, immersive moment within the restaurant — a piece that blends craftsmanship, performance, and theatre, and one that reflects the ambition and scale of The Londoner in Macau.
